Neurophysiotherapy is a branch of physiotherapy that assesses and treats physical impairments secondary to a neurological cause such as acquired injuries to the brain or spinal cord or disorders due to genetic abnormalities. We base our treatments on sound, specialist assessments and problem solve movement disorders that are a result of the neurological impairment.

Neurophysiotherapy has a role to play in most if not all neurological conditions. The purpose of the therapy will differ between conditions and will also be dependent upon the stage of the condition and it’s responsiveness to interventions. Our therapies can be split broadly into five categories:

  1. Restorative therapy – where we use our intervention techniques to promote recovery.
  2. Optimisation therapy – in some instances the damage to the nervous system and musculoskeletal system is irreversible, however therapeutic interventions can help to improve what you have and make best use of the functions you possess.
  3. Compensatory therapy – Sometimes where an injury or illness has led to permanent disability new strategies can be learnt to optimise function.
  4. Maintenance therapy – With severe physical neurological impairments it is important that the complications associated with the injury or illness are well managed and symptoms are not left to worsen. For instance a programme of maintenance stretches and movements can often alleviate or control pain, which in turn can impact function, mood and quality of life.
  5. Promotion of health and wellbeing – as health professionals we are well equipped to provide information, advice and therapeutic interventions to facilitate your overall health and wellbeing, Providing you with evidenced based advice regarding aspects of life such as exercise will help you lead a healthier lifestyle and look after your body systems such as your heart.

Yes! Progressive disorders respond to exercise differently dependent upon the condition. In some instances it is important to avoid certain types of exercises to avoid adverse effects. However, there are other exercises which can be extremely beneficial and our experts can help you find the right interventions to best manage your condition.

Progressive disorders can present in a variety of ways and an individualised intervention based upon how the disorder affects you is crucial to optimise your function and/or to meet your goals.

Some neurological conditions follow a progressive pattern which physiotherapy cannot influence. Likewise some conditions or clients just don’t respond to certain interventions for various reasons. At Dorset Neuro Rehab we understand and value honesty. It will never be our intention to mislead you in relation to your prognosis. Sometimes it may take a few sessions to determine what may or may not work. We may advise you that we don’t think therapy will lead to improvements but it may be able to offer some element of maintenance. Conversely, you may have been told you will not improve but believe that you can. We will happily assess and give you an honest opinion about what we can offer and whether we feel improvements are likely to be made. Various factors influence a person’s potential to improve and your circumstances may have changed since you were told you won’t improve, now might be the time to reassess.

We treat every client as an individual, from the moment we meet you until the time we discharge you. We treat on a case by case basis, using our specialist skills to provide a thorough assessment from which we formulate a problem list and generate a treatment plan. From here we will reassess during our sessions to ensure the progress you want to make is being made, if it isn’t we review our treatments and determine if we can try something else. We will give you every opportunity to make improvements. This isn’t to say your previous therapists were wrong but we believe we have the skills to optimise your condition. If we cannot help we will give you an honest opinion and discuss with you other avenues to explore.

Our aim is to provide therapy provision across the whole of Dorset.

Currently we are able to offer assessment and treatment at your home, in residential homes and nursing homes. We are looking to build clinic locations across Dorset and will soon have our primary site located in Dorchester.

We are also able to offer therapy within community centres and gyms dependent upon location and would need to arrange this on an individual basis.

Our group sessions and eduction series do net yet have a fixed location and will be dependent on demand.

Please contact us to discuss where you would prefer to have your appointments.

Absolutely! If there isn’t a nearby clinic or you prefer to be seen at home we will come and see you. Occasionally we may need to factor travel costs into our prices but we will discuss this with you. Also it’s a great opportunity to find new dog walks!
