Our Vision
Developed by neurophysiotherapist, Ian Denslow, Dorset Neuro Rehab is located in Dorchester but serves the whole of Dorset. Whilst Dorset Neuro Rehab’s current focus is establishing a solid foundation in neurophysiotherapy we are fortunate to have affiliated therapists across Dorset who specialise in other disciplines. This allows us to shape our service to meet the needs and demands of clients across Dorset. It is our vision to provide a service to clients with neurological conditions based upon what you as a client group want and need. This is a huge opportunity for us as clinicians but also for this community to develop a service that is meaningful, specific and effective in treating clients with neurological conditions.
So...what is a neuro physio!?
There are many different specialisms within the field of physiotherapy and neurology is just one of them.
A neurological physiotherapist, or neuro physio for short, deals with conditions that predominantly affect the brain and spine, known as the central nervous system, as well as some conditions that affect the nervous system throughout the body and limbs, known as the peripheral nervous system.
Neuro physio’s are expert in specific neurological conditions such as Stroke, Spinal Cord Injury, acquired brain injuries and progressive disorders such as Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s and Motor Neurone Disease. Additionally a neuro physio must have the foundation knowledge of anatomy and physiology that underpins all the physiotherapy disciplines.
A critical component of physiotherapy, especially within neurophysiotherapy, is recognising normal and abnormal movement and working out what is causing problems and how to improve it or change it. This movement analysis is an invaluable skill within a neurological setting and often the crux of what we do as physiotherapists.
At Dorset Neuro Rehab we pride ourselves in our movement analysis skills and recognise common movement disorders as well as treating more unusual patterns of movement. We use various treatment techniques from “hands on physio” to more patient led exercises including pilates based concepts, stretching and strengthening, as well as techniques such as taping, hydrotherapy and functional electrical stimulation to help restore normal movements where possible.
All of our treatments are based on sound theoretical knowledge and we utilise evidenced based research to inform our treatment techniques. Our restorative techniques work on the principles of “neuroplasticity” which is the ability of the brain to adapt and reorganise to promote rehabilitation.
If restorative therapy is not viable we also teach compensatory strategies for efficiency and energy conservation/fatigue management as well as maintenance therapy.
